World Health Organization officials are holding a press conference Monday to brief the public on the coronavirus outbreak, which has infected more than 67.1 million people worldwide.
In many northern hemisphere countries, the outbreaks increase as the weather gets colder, sending people indoors where the virus can spread more easily. WHO Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus also expressed concern about the “growing awareness that the pandemic is over”.
Tedros said while the positive news surrounding vaccine development “gets us all going,” the public must continue to adhere to public health guidelines.
“We know it’s been a tough year and people are tired, but in hospitals that are over or congested it’s the hardest thing it can be,” he said on Friday. “The pandemic still has a long way to go, and decisions by leaders and citizens in the days ahead will determine both the short term course of the virus and the ultimate end to this pandemic.”
