The Design Journey Is About the Client

Design is an integral part of Kerr Construction & Design. Experience has taught us that renovations and custom home building go much smoother when we have our own design department.
Kerr has a large design staff
It is so much a part of the company, in fact, that we have a Design Manager, three Senior Designers, an Intermediate Designer plus a Junior Designer on staff.
Steven Butler is the Design Manager and an experienced Senior Designer, with extensive international architectural design experience.
Tremendous international and local experience
Originally from Australia, Steven studied his undergraduate & postgraduate at the University of New South Wales, Sydney where he earned a Masters degree in Architectural Design. He worked for several architectural companies in Melbourne and Sydney on projects that covered a broad range of industries including; residential, multi-residential, commercial, hospitality, community centres, sports pavilions, and heritage and government projects.
Steven has been in Vancouver since 2013. Before working at Kerr, he was Design Manager at other leading Design & Build companies where he designed custom homes, multi-dwelling projects, laneway houses and large-scale renovations across all Vancouver municipalities.
Today, at Kerr, he brings his international background and local Vancouver based experience to focus solely on applying his talents to bringing to fruition the renovation dreams that residential clients have for their homes. He calls it, guiding them along their “design journey.”
“Not trying to sell the client anything”
“I am not trying to sell the client anything,” he says. “I’m trying to educate the client and bring them along the design journey.”
The Design Journey
The design journey starts when Steven meets with the client but goes well beyond that first meeting. It is a process of Steven getting to know the client well enough to have an intimate understanding of what they are trying to accomplish with the renovations for their home. Usually, there is a lengthy back-and-forth, not always in person.
It is a highly personal discussion. Steven wants to know about the client’s family, their current & future circumstances, their needs, desires, and expectations, the nature of the home itself, including any constraints on the property or the house, and the financial concerns.
Based on this tremendous client input, Steven uses his vast professional skill and education, knowledge of city bylaws and building codes to craft a cohesive and breath-taking design for the client.
“Thrilled” is usually the client’s reaction to the end result of their design journey.
