Each bed can sleep, but a four-poster bed can accommodate even more.
“You can create a room within a room,” says Sandra Nunnerley, interior designer in New York. “It’s like a cocoon.”
That’s why she installed a custom-made four-poster bed in her New York apartment and often specified it for clients’ homes as well. “You are heavenly to sleep under,” she said.
There are several ways to create a canopy effect. One is to buy a canopy bed; another is to do what Mrs. Nunnerley did in her house: mount a fabric canopy on the ceiling that will hang curtains at the corners of the bed.
In any case, a canopy can add an extra touch of comfort in the fall.
“We have made a lot of these over the years,” said Ms. Nunnerley. “And I’ve never met anyone who doesn’t like to sleep in it.”
