Employees fully vaccinated against Covid should return to the office rather than run away, Tom Gimbel, CEO of LaSalle Network, told CNBC on Wednesday.
“The challenge we have is challenging the mindset of the employee,” said Gimbel, also founder of the Chicago-based national recruitment company. “They see it as a punishment to come back to the office, and they should see it as a perk to be back in the office, both for social and emotional reasons, as well as career and income growth.”
With many companies putting their return to work plans together, some employees are pushing to return to the office after working remotely for more than a year due to the pandemic.
“If we want to be competitive on a global or local level, we need to bring our employees together in the office, both for onboarding new employees and for camaraderie to ensure people stay close,” Gimbel said on “Squawk Box “And adds that bosses should mandate vaccinations to protect the majority of their workers from coronavirus.
Gimbel’s remarks follow Morgan Stanley’s recent decision to ban workers and customers who have not been vaccinated from returning to their offices in New York City and Westchester County, New York, effective July 12. Employees who are not fully vaccinated will have to continue working remotely, Company said employees.
Other financial giants are taking this approach as well: Goldman Sachs requires its US employees to report their vaccination status, and Blackstone is asking fully vaccinated US employees to return to the office full-time starting July 7, if they have vaccination status, they must keep this information confidential.
With the economy recovering and the labor market tight, Gimbel said, “It’s a labor market, but that’s going to change. And we’re seeing that.” He added, “Whether companies stay in business, go bankrupt or new ones emerge, there will be a time when people will be paid a little more to go to the office or whether they will choose to work elsewhere . “
Freedom of choice for employees is the best thing about the post-Covid shift, Gimbel said, adding, “If you don’t like the work of your company, you can go and work for another company.”
The country’s reopening efforts are against a backdrop of mounting concerns about the Delta-Covid transmissible variant, which was first identified in India. The Delta strain now accounts for 20% of all new cases in the U.S., said Dr. Anthony Fauci, Senior Medical Advisor to the White House, during a news conference Tuesday. That’s a 10% increase about two weeks ago.
With some companies requiring full vaccination, Dr. Scott Gottlieb in a later interview on Wednesday to “Squawk Box” that it was “unclear” why health facilities still treat Covid vaccines differently than other mandatory vaccinations.
“Health workers have to get a flu vaccine, a chickenpox vaccine, a hepatitis B vaccine. It is therefore unclear to me why healthcare facilities treat this differently as it puts patients at risk if a healthcare worker transfers it to a healthcare facility. So I think that has to happen. “Said Gottlieb.
The former head of the Food and Drug Administration said he believes that full FDA approval of Covid vaccines, currently under emergency clearance approval, will not make the difference for non-health companies to mandate it. He said larger companies may be more reluctant than smaller ones to require vaccines as part of a return to work.
