WASHINGTON – President Joe Biden will address the nation about the U.S. military’s evacuation efforts in Kabul of American citizens, U.S. Embassy staff, NATO nationals, vulnerable Afghan nationals, and Afghan nationals who have qualified for special immigrant visas.

The remarks, which were scheduled for 1:00 p.m. ET, are now being postponed, but he is expected to speak soon.

Thousands of Afghans have fled the gates of Hamid Karzai International Airport in Kabul to seek a flight out of the country after the Taliban quickly claimed control of the country.

The Pentagon has moved about 5,200 US soldiers to Kabul to keep the country safe and evacuate as many people as possible in a breathtaking takeover of the country by the Taliban.

The White House said on Friday that the US has flown about 9,000 people in cargo planes out of Kabul in the past six days. No flights have left Kabul Airport in the past 8 hours because Qatar has reached its capacity limit, two US officials told NBC News.
